ToggleWhat is Ajrakh Print?
Ajrakh (also spelled Ajrak) is a centuries-old block-printing craft originating from the Kutch region of Gujarat and the Sindh region.
Ajrakh Meaning
The word is believed to derive from the Arabic word azraq. It means blue, a nod to the deep indigo shades that are the craft’s signature.
Every Ajrakh piece is created through a labour-intensive resist-printing process using:
- Natural dyes
- Hand-carved wooden blocks, producing intricate geometric and floral patterns.
The Making of an Ajrakh Print Saree: A 16-Step Journey
Traditional Ajrakh printing is not a shortcut craft. The fabric goes through up to 16 stages of:
- washing,
- dyeing,
- resist-printing with natural pastes, and
- sun-drying before the final piece is ready.
Natural ingredients like:
Indigo, madder root (for reds), pomegranate rind, and harda are used to achieve those signature deep blues, warm reds, and earthy blacks.
This is what makes every Ajrakh piece genuinely unique. A slight variations in dye absorption mean no two sarees are ever exactly alike.
Why Ajrakh on Satin Silk?
Traditionally, Ajrakh printing was done on cotton. At AnayKaari, we believe in affordability. Our design is inspired by Ajrakh craft. Because we aim to provide a fabric experience that is both rooted in heritage and elevated for modern occasions.
Satin silk’s natural sheen brings out the richness of Ajrakh’s deep colours, making every drape feel like a statement.
The result is a Ajrakh Print Saree that works equally well at a festive family gathering, a wedding reception, or an office celebration.
How to Style an Ajrakh-Inspired Silk Saree
This unique fusion of deep colours and traditional patterns offers endless styling possibilities. Here is our guide to achieving the perfect look:
- The Perfect Blouse Pairing:
The key to styling this saree is simple elegance. A solid-coloured blouse in one of the saree’s secondary tones—such as burnt orange, ivory, or deep green—lets the detailed Ajrakh pattern do the talking without competing with it. - Choosing the Right Jewellery:
The earthy palette of Ajrakh pairs beautifully with oxidised silver or antique gold jewellery. A pair of striking jhumkas, a bold statement necklace, or even a maang tikka are excellent choices to complement the natural colours. - Draping Styles for Every Look
- Classic Nivi Drape: This timeless style is sleek and versatile.
- Bengali-Style Drape: Perfect for festive looks, this drape allows the pallu to fan out dramatically, showcasing the full beauty of the intricate block print.
Caring for Your Ajrakh-Inspired Satin Silk Saree
A piece this unique deserves to be cherished. To retain the lustrous feel of the satin silk and the vibrancy of the print, follow these gentle care instructions:
- Dry Clean Only: This is the best method to ensure the delicate nature of both the silk and the print is preserved.
- Cold Hand Wash as an Alternative: If dry cleaning is not possible, hand wash in cold water using a mild detergent.
- Avoid Wringing: Gently press out excess water without twisting.
- Dry in the Shade: Sunlight can fade both the natural dyes and the silk.
- Storage: Store folded in a clean muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight.
